How About a Flower Boost

Yesterday morning we took a field trip to a lady's house whose whole yard is a lovely garden.  She's got all kinds of flowers and plants.  She wrote a book and we've read it and consulted it for our own garden.  She's very nice.

Hmmm, she told me the name but I can't remember.  Darn. {Mom says celocia}

Bromeliad.

She even gave us cuttings for this but because it doesn't have a common name, only a Latin one, we can't remember what it's called.  Hopefully we can get the cuttings to root because this was our favorite. {Okay, she wrote Mom an email and said it's turnera alata}

Chinese Hat plant; totally cool!!

Uhhh...dunno.

Once again, dunno, but the flying bee is the best!

Purple Clematis

I really enjoy taking pictures of flowers. They are so much more cooperative than humans.

5 O'Clock Someday

This is what Andrew will look like at 5 o'clock in 20 years or so. Isn't he cute?

Why is it that the meals they like the most are also the messiest?

Can I Get a Ride Please? Anyone?

We went to the MacDill Airfest last weekend. Actually, I take that back. We went on Friday - family day. The air show here is so much fun but we always go on Friday before 250,000 people descend on MacDill AFB and make life miserable. Ahhh, the perks of having a military ID. Speaking of which, I seriously miss the commissary. Have I ever mentioned that?

Anyway. Check out some pictures I took with my cool camera.

A-10...lovely, lovely. You must be one hard-hearted individual if the sight of precision-flying F-16s doesn't inspire a bit of patriotism in you. Sigh. Even more lovely. He was about to take off. Isn't that cool.I should have taken the time to run these through Photoshop. I would have posted this next week then. No complaints about the lighting.Thunderbirds for lunch anyone? I could just eat them up. Lovely! I'm jealous. I want to fly. But I'd lose every organ within me to the barf bag.

There is a meme going through Facebook right now that I had a lot of fun with. Since one of my closest friends is holding out on doing Facebook (though I believe resistance is futile...), I am posting mine here too!

Here’s how it works: Google “[your first name] needs” (don't forget to include the quotes) and share the first 10 results. That's it: it is that simple. But be honest!

1. Johanna needs to know the disease may last from 9 months to 24 months. (Wow - I'm in shock. I had no idea it was that serious.)

2. Johanna needs to talk with Larry and let Chris know what is needed. (I've got Larry on the other line right now!)

3. Johanna needs not justify her reasons for asking questions. (That's right, people! So back off, already!)

4. Johanna needs structure. (Seriously.)

5. Johanna needs to offer a variety of goods in her business so that she can meet customer demand and thus maintain her profits. (If only my business had customer demand...)

6. Johanna needs to finish her paper. (Oh, my! Who re-enrolled me in school behind my back??)

7. Johanna needs networking and referral sharing. (Hmmm...wonder what for?)

8. Johanna needs your phone number! (Since I like talking on the phone so much...)

9. Johanna needs to come before the Commission for purchases over $1000. (I mean, if you're going to let me spend over $1000, I'll come before whomever I need to!)

10. Johanna needs new editors. (Especially since my current editors are on strike!)

I had a lot of fun doing that! Since I don't have a common name (at least not for English-speaking people), I wasn't sure how much would come up. I would be curious to see what would come up for Joanna, too!

Quick! Someone teach it some manners!

From three year old:
"Mom! The volcano is about to interrupt!!"

I am convinced that God gives us three year old children to keep us laughing when we really feel like crying!

This was fun, but I found myself feeling gypped by the travel ones. They are all things I wish I had seen in person, yet there weren't so many of the really cool places I've been included! I've been to 10 countries other than my own, and even to France, but not to Paris. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to travel some more! :)

Shopping

So there are a few things that I want to research bit better with this baby, namely slings and nursing bras. I had a sling when Ethan was little, and because he was colicky, he really needed that closeness, but I hated the particular sling. It was an adjustable kind that had a buckle closure. I always felt like it was insecure and I hated all the extra fabric hanging around. So I am researching the pouch style slings that are sized to mom's body rather than being adjustable. My friend who had a baby last month has one and she let me try it on with her baby in it. We are roughly the same size on top so I was able to see what it would feel like. I really liked it! The baby felt so much more secure than I remember with the sling I had. So I am really looking at two right now: Hotslings and Peanut Shell. So I would love to hear opinions from anyone who has a sling, especially if you have one like this that doesn't adjust but is fitted!

The other thing...nursing bras. I have bought my nursing bras cheaply at Motherhood with the boys. I remember not really being totally happy with them. But Aaron weaned himself at 8 months, so I didn't really need them to last. Ethan's were nasty by the time I weaned him when he was a year old. I never felt like they were totally comfortable, and they weren't totally supportive, and they didn't last long. I had to replace a couple of them with Ethan too. So this time I want to invest in some good ones. I am planning to nurse longer with this one and I really want them to last and be comfortable. Fortunately for me, Jenni at One Thing posed a nursing bra question this week! She has so many more readers than we do so she got tons and tons of responses. So I am going to look at what was recommended to her. Of course, I don't get absolutely huge, so that is not a consideration for me like she said it was for her, but still, it is a great starting point. Any suggestions on good nursing bras? I know I have a few months to consider, but you know, I like to be prepared!

Nostalgia

Is there anything more nostalgic than the TV show Little House on the Prairie? I remember watching it with my mom in the late afternoons growing up. The past two days, I have lay on the couch during the boy's nap and watched an episode of this classic show on the Hallmark channel. It sure does bring back memories! Why can't there be truly good TV on today?

Too Cute

Our family says, "I love you" a lot and shows a lot of affection. The boys are even affectionate with each other as far as hugs and helping each other a lot. Even so, today I got a big treat. For the first time ever I heard them say their love to each other. It was so cute! They were just walking toward the table to get a drink in the midst of their play and Ethan said, "I love you, Aaron!" and after he swallowed his water, Aaron enthusiastically replied, "Love you, too!" Now doesn't that just melt you heart?

Tie Another One On

Friend. Let's explore.

John 15:14 You are my friends if you do what I command.

-Really? OK, I'll be calling you later with a few comm...er, requests.

Job 16:20 My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God;

-Thanks for praying for me when I asked, and when I didn't ask.

Proverbs 12:26 A righteous man is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.

-This is so poignant for me considering all the changes and times we've been through.

Proverbs 27:6 Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.

-Thanks for setting me straight, even when it hurts.

Ecclesiastes 4:10 If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!

-No pointless commentary needed.

Matthew 20:13 "But he answered one of them, 'Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Didn't you agree to work for a denarius?

-I clearly saw $65 myself on the receipt, next time I'm going to hold you to a denarius.

Matthew 22:12 'Friend,' he asked, 'how did you get in here without wedding clothes?' The {wo}man was speechless.

-Johanna, you did wear clothes to your wedding, right?

Luke 16:9 I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.

-You tell me, because I don't get it myself; but it sure does sound nice.

John 16:13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.

-You knew this was going to be in here, didn't you.

Proverbs 27:9 Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of one's friend springs from his earnest counsel.

Only your real friends will tell you when your face is dirty. ~Sicilian Proverb

But if the while I think on thee, dear friend,
All losses are restored and sorrows end.
~William Shakespeare

Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art.... It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things that give value to survival. ~C.S. Lewis

A true friend is one who thinks you are a good egg even if you are half-cracked. ~Author Unknown

It has been an honor and a privilege for me to be your friend through the years. May God bless you and keep you, may he make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you, may the Lord turn his face to you and give you peace.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

We Are the Worst Bloggers Ever!

So we don't post here so much...I am tired of seeing a post about a funeral when this blog pops up! But sadly, I'm too tired to do much about it! We have lifegroup at our house tonight, and I'm sitting here typing this when I need to mop, clean the dishes, and put away the ironing...

I am going to a baby shower Saturday and I am making the cake. I bought all new cake pans for this one. I was tired of doing the same 'ol, same 'ol, so I bought a cute baby buggy pan and a set of square pans. I am going to put the buggy on top of a square, because the buggy alone won't be enough cake. But I haven't started that either. I haven't made the gifts I'm taking either. Hmmm....I think I have some work to do. Good news, though - I'll post the cake and the gifts when I'm done!

On another note, have you seen the post about Ted Turner's view on how we'll all be cannibals in 40 or so years on Granny's? I had to crack up when I read this! Apparently, we're personally assuring that people will eat other people in the near future just because we have more than one or two children! Too funny!

One Disaster After Another

Things I've Been Meaning To Post About

I got new shoes several weeks ago. I think I'm becoming something other than the alterna-chick I was so many years ago. My poor Chucks are lonely. I might wear them more often if they were cool blue plaid like these. And if I didn't have to tie them. I hate tying shoes. Aren't they cute?

I made this skirt for Easter. I like it but I have to wear a slip with it so I might add a liner to it so when the wind blows it doesn't show off my lacy slip-that-I-bought-for-$5-that-will-no-doubt-die-after-just-three-washes. I'm going to make another skirt out of this pattern because I like it so much.

Last night I got out my iron, ironing board, spray bottle, a whole boat-load of shirts and some pants to iron and found a television show I could watch while ironing. I plugged in the iron and IT WAS BROKEN. Argh! So, while I was doing school with the girls this morning Del ran out and got me a new iron. I just assumed that he would get another $20 version that lasted us nearly 10 years (the secret it to use a spray bottle and not put water in the iron itself) but my beloved came home with a Rowenta. Yes, it's true. He entered Joann's himself and bought me a Rowenta. He is so thoughtful. Let me just say how blessed I am to have him as my husband. I know it's just an iron, but there was so much love in the gesture and a heart to please me. I love him, in case you didn't know that or couldn't tell.
Tonight I will iron furiously with my new lovely iron and watch Top Chef. Is it 8 o'clock yet? I can't remember ever in my life looking forward to ironing.

I was pretty sure there were some other things I wanted to post about but I can't remember. I'll write them down next time.

Freezer!!

Allow me to introduce you to my new toy!! Just delivered - a brand spanking-new 20 cu. foot freezer! This thing is mammoth! It is my birthday present this year. I have been wanting a freezer for a long time, and I couldn't be more excited. Now, each month when I pick up my Angel Food box, I won't have to figure out a way to cram it into my existing freezer. When I want to make a double or triple batch of something, I'll have a place to put the leftovers. When I need to prepare food in advance for a birth, I'll have plenty of room to store it. Can you "see" me drooling?

Thanks for the idea! It was a hit.
