Growing Up
Why is it that the words "Oh my gosh!" sound so much worse out of the mouth of a four year old than that of a thirty-two year old? I find myself not wanting my children to say phrases like this, yet I say them. What's your house rule? I find myself asking them not to say it. What exclamation should they say? And what on earth am I going to do when they are eleven and try to say something much less tame than this?

We've just been dealing with this issue!! We say things like "darn it" and "freaking" and the kids copy us. I've been trying to tame my speech because it sounds horrendous when Lily walks around going "oh darn it". I don't know what else to say though.

I have always had a real problem with "shut up"... I mean I always said it as a kid, got in trouble for saying it as a kid; wouldn't let my kids say it, but I still say it, so of course they do; and I still try to get my kids to NOT SAY IT!!!
Ack.
If I could have only kept from saying it ALL MY LIFE, this wouldn't be a problem. *rolleyes*
I had a really bad habit of saying the naughtier version of "darn it". But, Caleb broke me of the habit when he used it on the playground when he was about 2.5 years old. Now I say things like "aw, man!" and "good grief!" And that's what Caleb says. I don't think either one of them sounds really awful when he says them.
Shane mostly says bad things when he's driving (like "idiot" and "stupid monkey", but so far Caleb hasn't adopted them... yet.
Is "Oh my goodness" a bad expression? I say that quite a bit and my 2-yr-old has picked it up.
We are dealing with that here too. I was always pleased that I adopted 'freaking' instead of the alternative, but we were in church and Elena was using the potty - one of the leaders, not knowing she was in there, turned out the lights. When she came out she said, really loudly, "That freakin' scared me out!" It was at that point I realize I need to find a new word!
We try to stick to 'holy moly' and 'oh my goodness' Oh- and the Brits say 'crumbs'(as in "oh, crumbs!") we like that and have picked that up in lieu of 'darn it' or 'crap'.
What was even funnier was Lily walking around the house saying, "What the heck!" It was hard to hide your smile. I remember that GG always said, "Oh, piffles!" That isn't a take off from any of the other swear words like heck & darn & shoot.
"crap" I say a lot, and "sucks"...my language is boring. I need to expand my vocab. I like "crumbs", that's funny!

Anja, 22 mos., says "Oh my gosh" all the time, for random things, and I HATE it. I agree that it seems so strange coming out of her mouth. I tell her that she shouldn't say it, but every once in a while it slips out of my mouth, so I can hardly blame her for copying me. Sigh...
